Before search engines, there were cyclopaedias. Here, reputation meets record. Parke Godwin's The Cyclopaedia Of Biography gathers the lives of eminent persons into a single, usable biographical dictionary: brisk portraits, key dates, public work, and the context that makes achievement legible. Names become lives, not labels. Dip in for a single entry or read by curiosity, moving from statesmen and scientists to writers, reformers, soldiers, and artists. As an encyclopedia of biographies and a practical historical reference book, it suits the armchair browser as well as student history research, offering a grounded way to place notable historical figures within their age. Its value is also its moment. As one of the defining nineteenth-century biographical works, this victorian era reference reflects how knowledge was organised before modern databases: authoritative, compact, and designed for quick consultation. For readers who enjoy who was who biographies, it is a world biography compendium with the satisfying weight of selection and judgement; for genealogists, it can spark lines of inquiry alongside genealogy and family research, pointing to careers, regions, and networks worth pursuing. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Whether you are building an antique reference book collection or simply want a reliable guide to the people who shaped history, this cyclopaedia rewards return visits.
