Curly: An Actor's Story is a memoir written by John Coleman and published in 1885. The book tells the story of the author's life as an actor in the late 19th century, focusing on his experiences working with a popular theatre company called the Curly Company. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which covers a different period in Coleman's life. He begins by describing his childhood and early years in the theatre, before moving on to his time with the Curly Company. Coleman provides a detailed account of the company's performances, the challenges they faced, and the personalities of the actors he worked with.Throughout the book, Coleman also reflects on the broader context of the theatre industry in the late 19th century. He discusses the impact of new technologies like gas lighting and the rise of realism in theatre, as well as the social and economic factors that shaped the industry.Overall, Curly: An Actor's Story provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of theatre in the late 19th century, as seen through the eyes of one actor. It offers a unique perspective on the challenges and rewards of a career in the theatre, and sheds light on the broader cultural and historical context in which it took place. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
