Cupid and Psyche: A Mythological Tale, From The Golden Ass Of Apuleius is a book that retells the ancient Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche. The story follows the beautiful mortal Psyche, who is so stunning that people begin to worship her instead of the goddess Venus. In response, Venus sends her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. However, Cupid falls in love with Psyche himself and takes her away to a hidden palace where he visits her every night. Psyche is forbidden from seeing Cupid's face, but her curiosity gets the best of her and she lights a lamp to see him. Cupid is angered by this and leaves her. Psyche then embarks on a quest to win back Cupid's love and forgiveness. The book was originally written by Apuleius in the second century AD, and this particular edition was translated into English by William Adlington in 1566 and edited by Walter Pater in 1842. It is a classic tale of love, jealousy, and redemption that has captivated readers for centuries. From The Second Anonymous London Edition Of 1800, In Which Many Omissions Are Supplied.
