Cupid and Psyche: A Legend is a romantic novel written by Shakerley Marmion in 1820. The story is based on the ancient Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche, which tells the story of a mortal woman named Psyche who falls in love with the god of love, Cupid. The novel follows the same plot, with added details and characters. The story begins with Psyche, a beautiful and kind-hearted young woman, who is so beautiful that people start to worship her instead of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus becomes jealous and orders her son, Cupid, to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. However, Cupid falls in love with Psyche himself and decides to make her his wife.Cupid visits Psyche every night, but she is not allowed to see his face. One night, she becomes curious and lights a lamp to see him, but accidentally spills hot oil on him, causing him to wake up and flee. Psyche is heartbroken and sets out on a quest to find Cupid and win back his love.Along the way, she encounters various obstacles and challenges, including a dangerous journey through the underworld. She is aided by several gods and goddesses, including Venus, who eventually forgives her and agrees to let her be with Cupid. The novel is a classic tale of love, jealousy, and redemption, and has been adapted into numerous works of literature, art, and music. Marmion's version of the story is known for its vivid imagery, poetic language, and emotional depth. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
