Cultural Relations in the Global Community: Problems and Prospects was first published in 1981. This 2026 publication is a reissue of that edition with very slight additions. The first edition gives the following description. Cultural Relations in the Global Community: Problems and Prospects focuses attention on emerging critical dimensions of the modern interdependent world. While interdependence impinges on all nations in the field of science and technology, economics, politics, education and research, human health, environmental well being, etc., the nature and meaning of interdependence continue to be rather unclear. It is however possible to see in recent discussions of the subject certain new trends and perspectives which are capable of offering deeper understanding of 'this complex and often overpowering reality'.
The book identifies and examines some of the significant characteristics of interdependence primarily from a cultural point of view. Authors of the different chapters have made an effort to take current thinking and interpretations of interdependence to a point of further analysis, clarification and appraisal. While they have brought to this task special aptitude and interests of their own, they have done so without losing sight of the unity underlying them. They have thus been able to present an interconnected and insightful picture of the contemporary world capable of offering fresh approaches to the theory and practice of international and intercultural relations. The editors are described as follows:
Bickley, Verner Courtenay, MBE, Ph.D. (28 April 1926), Linguistics and Education, University of Wales and University of London. Director, Culture Learning Institute, East-West Center, Honolulu, since 1971. Earlier, was language officer in Japan and first secretary of the British Embassy Cultural Department in Tokyo. Spent more than 20 years in Asia, first with the British Overseas Civil Service and then with the British Council. Formerly Visiting Professor, University of Tokyo; Professor of Language and Linguistics, University of Indonesia, Advisor on Language Teaching, Rangoon, Burma; Education Officer, Singapore. Author of numerous articles and books. Philip, Puthenparampil John, Ph.D. (1 May 1916), Philosophy and Political Science, University of Madras and London School of Economics. Research Fellow, Culture Learning Institute, East-West Center, Honolulu, since 1976. Previously, Director, Institute for Religion and Social Change, Honolulu; Secretary, University Grants Commission, New Delhi; Lecturer in Political Theory and international Relations, Patna University; Research Officer, Parliament of India, New Delhi. Author of several publications. An internet search adds considerably to these brief biographies of the editors.
