The purpose of this research was to examine and collect information regarding the cultural practices and competencies of nursing homes as it relates to the social activities programs for nursing home residents. This study used mixed methods research methodologies to explore the cultural competency of social activities programs in nursing homes. Using self-administered surveys, this study employed correlational statistics to determine if relationships existed between the cultural competency levels of nursing homes' activities directors and the cultural diversity of the social activities programs in nursing homes. This study also employed correlational statistics to determine if relationships existed between the ethnic/racial diversity of nursing homes' resident populations and cultural diversity of the social activities programs in nursing homes. Additionally, this study employed qualitative research methodologies to explore activities directors' views and perceptions of cultural competency as it relates to activities programs within nursing homes. The influx of the baby boomer generation will reform the long-term care industry, and the needs of ethnically/racially diverse baby boomers will play a significant role in the reformation. In as much as nursing homes are the primary provider of institutionalized eldercare, examining their ability to serve diverse populations is warranted in light of the changing elder demographics. Research that examines the cultural competency of nursing homes has the potential to provide needed information that will facilitate preparing for the influx of baby boomers.
