Every child is drawing the same scarecrow. Miriam Bell came to Black Acre Elementary for a fresh start. A quiet classroom. A small farm town. One year where she could prove she was still the kind of teacher who noticed when children were in trouble.
Then her fourth graders start drawing the field behind the school. The same fence.
Then her fourth graders start drawing the field behind the school. The same fence.
The same crows.
The same scarecrow with its bent neck and stitched mouth. Everyone in Briarwick says it's just local folklore. Seasonal art. Children copying children. But the drawings match old class photos, the crows gather whenever someone lies, and the field behind the playground has been locked for longer than anyone wants to explain. The children know the rules.
Don't cross the fence.
Don't count thirteen crows.
Don't say the buried names out loud.
And never ask what happened to the class that didn't come back. Now Miriam must uncover the truth behind Briarwick's harvest traditions before the town chooses another child to keep its oldest secret buried. Because the scarecrow isn't there to frighten the children. It's there to watch what the adults did. Crows is a small-town folk horror novel about strange children, rural silence, a fenced field behind a school, and the terrible things a community will do to survive. Perfect for readers who love creepy-kid horror, buried secrets, outsider-teacher stories, and slow-burning dread with a sharp, character-driven edge. Readers search for: small town horror, folk horror novel, creepy kid horror, scarecrow horror, crows horror, rural horror, outsider teacher horror, school horror novel, children drawing creepy things, haunted field horror, buried secret horror, farm town horror, harvest horror, collective silence horror, character driven horror, supernatural small town mystery, creepy classroom horror, rural folk horror, dark secrets, missing children horror, fenced field horror, scarecrow in field, black birds horror
