Book six of the Viper Clan follows Vittorio Pipistrello, son of Valentino Pipistrello and Theodosius Viper through his twin sister Elaine, growing up from the 1930s and 40s in the Veil during troubling times. Vittorio is oblivious to it all, his life is all about developing into a fully-fledged vampire and joining academy, hanging out with his friends Bruno and Ruprecht, and trying his best to tell the girl he loves that he's actually really serious about it. But life will take a turn at forcing all of Vittorio's friends and peers to grow up fast as a strange group known as the Purists start making their presence known.

This group has a real hatred for Wastes like Vittorio's parents but worse still, a desire to cull the curious group of vampires known only derogatorily as the 'Sparklers' from the face of the planet. Emmeline, Vittorio's love, is one of these curious beings with an ancient link to the Jewish faith but an oath never to consume human blood... benign and peaceful but hated by the rest of the vampire elite for reasons Vittorio cannot understand. As the fear and hate are stirred, Vittorio will find himself pulled into the situation not only to save Emmeline but also to help the Veil as the Purists go from obscure to dominating!

All this while his fathers must protect their fellows too and try to raise Vittorio all the while watching his romance with Emmeline try to bloom... but all of it is marred by the presence of one nasty creature called Sturm and the badge he wears with that demonic cattle skull with crooked serpents instead of horns.
