The work of Dom Adalbert de Vogüé, OSB (1924-2011) serves as the basis of all serious study of the Rule of Benedict. In this second volume, Vogüé first provides historical and critical commentary on texts from the Rule of the Master and other early sources, then shows how Benedict integrated and developed this material in writing his Prologue, Epilogue and chapters on the Tools of Good Works, Silence and Humility.
With the completion of this second volume of Vogüé's commentary on the Rule of St. Benedict, Sister Colleen Maura McGrane has given to the English-reading world several gifts: access to an esteemed and erudite monastic author who, though now deceased, is still one of the world's most prominent and eminent monastic scholars; a translation that is accurate and yet graceful to the English reader's interior ears; and lastly, the vast amounts of time that such a translation, with its many and often technical endnotes, she generously gave.
