This book is the second of two volumes that not only delves into a broad array of critical theories in contemporary social work education, but it also offers practical social work steps of applying these theories to practice with diverse populations.
There has been a steady increase in immigration to Canada which has necessitated advanced ways of working with the complex issues faced by these immigrants. The situations have become more urgent after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's reports and its findings that heavily indicts social work in Canada. In addition, the murder of George Floyd in the United States heightened racial tensions in Canada and the US. These events as well as the increasing presence of racialized immigrants in Canada have increased demands on social work education to offer critical theoretical and practical insights about the most effective ways to work with diverse populations. This book uniquely meets this need.
Vol. 2 focuses on the practice of critical social work practice with diverse populations in and outside of Canada. The chapters in this volume explore how critical theoretical frameworks can be used in areas of intervention such as mental health, harm reduction, recreation, education, employment, cultural adaptation, settlement, colonization, reconciliation with Indigenous communities, and entrepreneurship. The chapters share practice experience or research findings on applying critical approaches in social work with diverse populations in Canada including youth, women, Indigenous communities, the Black populations, international students, sexual minorities, refugees, and seniors. They provide models of applying critical frameworks in frontline practice with diverse communities and share the lessons from the lived experiences.
Critical Multicultural Social Work in Canada, Vol. 2: Practice Realities showcases examples of critical social work practice with immigrants and diverse people in Canada. The book provides updated data on immigration, changes in attitudes towards diversity after COVID-19, and references to contemporary challenges to plurality in Canadian society. This textbook is intended for undergraduate and graduate social work programs and intercultural studies programs in Canada. It also serves undergraduate and graduate students in social sciences and humanities programs such as nursing, correctional services, management, public health, and child and youth work. Furthermore, the volume would be of interest to social work practitioners and other helping professionals in Canada.
