Crime and the Criminal is a foundational study of the sociological and psychological factors that define deviant behavior and the legal response to it. Written with an academic rigor characteristic of early 20th-century social science, this work explores the complex relationship between the individual and the evolving legal systems designed to maintain social order.
The text provides a comprehensive analysis of various theories regarding the origins of crime, questioning both the biological and environmental influences that lead individuals toward illegal acts. Philip Archibald Parsons examines the history of criminal law, the classification of different types of offenders, and the institutional responses to social transgression. By critiquing contemporary penal methods, the author advocates for a more scientific and reformative approach to justice and rehabilitation.
As a significant contribution to the field of social pathology, Crime and the Criminal offers detailed insights into how society perceives and manages those who violate its norms. This book remains a vital historical resource for those interested in criminology, penology, and the history of social science, providing a window into the development of modern criminal justice theory.
