A traveler gets lost in dense jungle and stumbles on an old man who doesn't simply tell the story of creation. He opens it - hands over the pieces one at a time and makes the traveler put them together himself.
It starts in the primordial waters, in the consciousness of Nammu, of Sophia, before there was anything to call a beginning. Then Tiamat rises. Marduk. Enki. Kings, bloodlines, the first civilizations, and eventually us - not as separate stories, but as fragments of one memory, scattered across cultures and centuries by people who forgot they were all telling the same thing.
Take Marduk. A younger god, ambitious, terrified of the chaos his own mother represents, so he kills her and builds order out of her body - carves the world from what he destroyed. That's not an ancient plot point. That's every institution that's ever paved over what it feared instead of understanding it. Every generation that built its stability on top of something it refused to look at directly. The elder doesn't explain that connection to the traveler. He just tells the story and waits for it to land.
That's the whole method of the book. Divine wars, engineered divisions, knowledge buried on purpose, humanity reset more than once, and systems built afterward to keep people searching outside themselves for a power that never left. It doesn't ask you to believe any of it. It won't make you choose between mythology and history, spirituality and common sense - it lays the pattern down and lets you do what you were always going to do with it: decide for yourself.
By the time the elder's account winds down, the gods aren't characters anymore. Their fear, their ambition, their jealousy and the things they woke up to - you've already met these. Not in a temple. In yourself, and in people you know.
Whether the gods existed was never really the question. What they're still showing you about yourself - that's the one worth sitting with.
If you're drawn to ancient civilizations, origin stories, hidden history, or the sense that there's more underneath all of it: this isn't another retelling of the beginning. It's a mirror. And once you see yourself in it, creation doesn't look the same again.
