Nobody in these poems says what they mean.

A mother counts boots from the bottom of a cellar stair. A man saves forty-one messages from his mother and never plays them. A husband says his friend's favourite song because he does not have one of his own.

He says: I know.
He does not know.

These are poems about the distance between what people feel and what they say. Some are about love. Some are about grief. Some are about war. None of them raise their voice.

Plain language. Concrete detail. The meaning is never stated - you find it, usually a line or two after you have already felt it.

A woman checks her face in the back of a spoon. A wife's hand finds her husband's wrist while she is looking at her phone. A father watches his daughter learn to be someone else.

You will know what they mean before they do.

Illustrated throughout by Sami Bsoul.

Is that real, or crazy?
