Drawing on thirteen years inside the Canadian Armed Forces, personal records, public reviews and after-action discipline, Ryan Bardyla asks a harder question than whether the institution has good people or good intentions. Canada repeatedly produces soldiers, technicians and teams of remarkable usefulness. Why does the larger machine so often frustrate, dilute and leak that capability after it has been built?
The book follows the collisions between systems that can each look rational on their own: training, career incentives, official languages, technical authority, headquarters reporting, military health care, recovery, disclosure, retention and lessons learned. Personal recollection is separated from documentary fact. Records are allowed to correct memory. Institutional defender cases are stated before repairs are proposed. Even the book's own flagship metric is narrowed when an adversarial recode produces a less convenient result.
This is not a complaint book and not a demand to return to a mythical old Army. It is an after-action review built around one practical test: what changes for Cpl Bloggins on Monday morning?
