Danny sells his body for pennies. His life is made up of many problems, including the debt to Lord Anderson, an unscrupulous criminal who dominates the slums of Manchineel. Only Dorothy, a young future prostitute, seems to care about him. All that changes when he meets the charismatic Earl Erdley, who puts him under his protection. The count himself, however, seems to hide a dark secret: Lord Anderson claims that he killed his wife, the beloved Countess Madeleine, during an earthquake; so, with deceit, he leads Danny to investigate against the benefactor. The young boy finds himself reading the diaries that the couple wrote during their marriage, discovering well hidden secrets, while continuous doubt will slowly tease his mind: is there really a chance that there is a murderer hiding under the count's eccentric but perfect facade?
