Counts, Dukes and even Kings of the Anjou dynasty have played a major role in the construction of the French kingdom and then of other European countries. Starting from a small city in the west of France, they succeeded in building an empire the limits of which were the Hadrien Wall (south of Scotland) down to the Pyrenean mountains. They also reigned for some time in Palestine and Robert d'Anjou Sicile was even Emperor of Constantinople during the 14th century. This first book describes the life of the first eight successive counts (850-1100) and ends just before the conquest of the throne of England by Henri Plantagenet.
