The Countess Cathleen is a play written by the famous Irish poet and playwright, William Butler Yeats. The play is set in Ireland during the time of famine and poverty, and tells the story of a wealthy Countess who sells her soul to the devil in order to save her people from starvation. The Countess is moved by the plight of the poor and decides to use her wealth to help them. However, she soon realizes that her wealth is not enough to save everyone, and she turns to the devil for help. The devil agrees to help the Countess, but only if she gives him her soul in return. The Countess, desperate to save her people, agrees to the devil's terms. However, when she returns to her people with the food and supplies that the devil has provided, they reject her, believing that she has obtained the supplies through evil means. The play explores themes of sacrifice, morality, and the conflict between the individual and the greater good. It also contains elements of Irish folklore and mythology, as well as Yeats' own spiritual beliefs. The Countess Cathleen is considered one of Yeats' most important works, and has been praised for its poetic language, powerful imagery, and complex themes.OONA. The empty rattle-pate! Lean on this arm, That I can tell you is a christened arm, And not like some, if we are to judge by speech. But as you please. It is time I was forgot. Maybe it is not on this arm you slumbered When you were as helpless as a worm. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
