The book contains a series of designs for rural cottages and cottage villas, along with practical advice on their construction and landscaping. The book is divided into three parts. The first part provides an overview of the principles of cottage architecture, including the importance of simplicity, symmetry, and harmony with the surrounding landscape. The second part contains detailed plans and elevations for various types of cottages, including single-story and two-story designs, as well as cottages with attached or detached outbuildings. The third part of the book focuses on the landscaping and gardening of cottage residences. Downing provides advice on the selection of trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as the layout of gardens and lawns. He emphasizes the importance of creating a harmonious relationship between the house and its surroundings, and encourages the use of natural materials and forms in the landscape design.
