The Cost of Souls: A Flicker in the Void
Emily returns from her vacation expecting things to be normal again.
At first, everything seems fine. She feels a slight off energy, but when she checks in with her witchcraft,
nothing shows up. No warnings, no signs.
So she does what she usually avoids doing - she trusts logic instead.
Emily returns from her vacation expecting things to be normal again.
At first, everything seems fine. She feels a slight off energy, but when she checks in with her witchcraft,
nothing shows up. No warnings, no signs.
So she does what she usually avoids doing - she trusts logic instead.
That turns out to be a mistake.
Small things start happening in her apartment. Subtle at first. Almost easy to explain away.
Then they stop being easy to ignore. Something is there with her, and it is getting bolder.
Meanwhile, Joseph - a Senior Elder, bound by duty, ambition, and the politics of the Elder Council - is watching from a distance, unbeknownst to Emily. An old friend and secretly in love with her, his feelings for her are not simple, and they refuse to stay contained within the rules he is meant to uphold. Torn between responsibility and something far more dangerous, his choices are increasingly shaped by emotions he would never openly acknowledge.
In a misguided attempt to keep her safe and to maintain control over a situation that is already slipping beyond defined boundaries, he believes one of the surveillance cameras in her apartment has failed, and sends one of his operatives, a Half, to quietly replace it.
As Emily continues practising her magic, whatever is in her apartment begins to escalate fast. Joseph can no longer dismiss what he's seeing as coincidence or paranoia, and he's forced to take the situation higher - to the Above.
Old faces return as things spiral: Jessica, Maris, Graham, and Phyllis all re-enter Emily's world just as it begins to destabilise again, along with new players who step into the mess whether they want to or not.
What follows is a mix of humour and darkness, warmth and unease, magic and mystery tangled together. There are broken hearts, jealousy, politics, and the kind of emotional fallout nobody really recovers from cleanly.
Emily is now dealing with more than magic.
She's dealing with the consequences of her actions, of choices, of history, and of things that were never fully resolved.
And the question isn't just whether she can learn to master her magic anymore.
But whether this time, can she survive?
