Amid the global rise of Korean popular culture, interest in learning the Korean language has surged - but few understand the complex history behind its modern form. This book traces the emergence of vernacular Korean as a distinct subject of study in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, illuminating a transformative period in Korea's linguistic and national development.
