To Jlli, to whom these presents shall come or may in any wise concern: Greetings Whereas our well-heloved Asa Porter, late of Haverhill, in the State of New Hampshire, Esquire, on behalf of-himself and thirty-two Assn. elates, hereinafter named, by his Petition, bearing date the twenty-seventh day of February, in the year of Our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two, presented unto our trusty and well-beloved Alured Clarke, then our Lieutenant-Governor and Commander-in-Chief of our said Province, hath humbly requested us to grant unto him, the said Asa Porter, and to his said Associates, and to his and their heirs and assigns forever, in free and common soccage, a tract or parcel of our waste lands situate, lying and being within our province of Lower Canada, in America. The course pursued by Porter, the Leader, with regard to the township, was in former y.ears the origin of much trouble. Not possessing the means necessary to defray the expenses attendant on the leadership, he hired money for this purpose of an individual in Quebec, and gave him a mortgage on the township as security.
