Angelomaria Alessio esplora la soglia (limen) come chiave interpretativa del cristianesimo, mostrando come la fede non nasca dall'eliminazione della distanza tra Dio e l'uomo, ma dall'abitare tale distanza in forma incarnata. La tesi centrale sostiene che la rivelazione cristiana, la grazia e la libertà umana si comprendono pienamente solo se pensate come eventi di attraversamento, e non come realtà possedute o evidenze imposte.
Il percorso prende avvio da tre esperienze sensibili fondamentali - spazio, profumo e musica - lette come luoghi quotidiani in cui il mistero si lascia intuire senza mai farsi oggetto. Lo spazio rituale diventa soglia da attraversare con il corpo; il profumo, presenza che si manifesta proprio nel suo svanire; la musica, tempo che accade e passa, educando all'ascolto e all'attesa. Attraverso queste esperienze, l'autore mostra come la fede cristiana si comunichi secondo una logica simbolica, discreta e non coercitiva.
A partire da qui, la riflessione sviluppa una cristologia e una ecclesiologia della soglia. Cristo è presentato come il limen vivente in cui Dio e l'uomo si incontrano senza confondersi: l'Incarnazione come attraversamento, la Croce come soglia drammatica tra silenzio e gloria, la Risurrezione come apertura di un tempo nuovo che non cancella la storia ma la rende ospitale alla promessa. La Chiesa, in questa prospettiva, non è un recinto chiuso ma uno spazio liminale, chiamato ad abitare le frontiere della cultura, della fragilità e della ricerca umana attraverso linguaggi come la liturgia, l'arte e la carità . La riflessione si concentra poi sull'essere umano come soglia vivente, posto tra Dio e il mondo. Attraverso figure emblematiche della mistica del quotidiano - Hillesum, Carretto, Weil - emerge una spiritualità che non fugge la realtà ma la attraversa, riconoscendo nella fragilità , nel silenzio e nella responsabilità storica luoghi autentici dell'incontro con Dio. Da qui prende forma una proposta pastorale ed educativa che privilegia il discernimento, l'ascolto e l'accompagnamento, piuttosto che risposte immediate e rassicuranti. La conclusione propone la tesi più radicale del volume: la grazia stessa è una soglia. Essa non si impone, ma si offre; non risolve l'enigma dell'esistenza, ma lo abita rendendolo fecondo. In un tempo segnato dalla crisi delle certezze religiose, la liminalità appare come una risorsa decisiva per il cristianesimo del futuro: una fede capace di stare tra visibile e invisibile, tra domanda e promessa, senza chiudere lo spazio dell'incontro. Il libro si apre infine alla prospettiva di una mistagogia del limen e di una estetica della rivelazione, in cui il sensibile e il simbolico tornano a essere vie privilegiate per accedere al mistero cristiano.
