Russia was a backward country-but the extent of this backwardness is often overlooked. While Western Europe had already moved beyond absolutism, Russia was only just implementing it.
In Western Europe, absolutism had been authoritarian; in Russia, it became totalitarian.
This paradox meant that as democratic processes advanced in the West, Russian absolutism grew even less democratic. Within Russia, there could exist no true opposition capable of questioning the presence or legitimacy of communism or socialism.
Contra Communism explores this historical and political paradox in depth, shedding light on the unique path that led Russia from imperial rule to the rigid structures of Soviet absolutism.
