Composition by Arthur Wesley Dow is a foundational treatise on art education and design that revolutionized how artists perceive and create visual harmony. Rather than focusing on literal imitation of nature, Dow presents a structured approach to the fundamental elements of art, emphasizing three core principles: line, notan (the interaction of light and dark), and color.
By synthesizing Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions, this work moves toward a focus on structural beauty and creative expression. Dow's method encourages the artist to see the underlying architecture of a composition, providing practical guidance on spatial relationships, rhythm, and balance. The text remains an essential resource for students, educators, and professional artists who wish to master the craft of visual arrangement.
As one of the most influential manuals in the history of art instruction, Composition has guided generations of creatives, including modernists like Georgia O'Keeffe. Its timeless insights into the harmony of shapes and tones make it a vital addition to any library of art theory and practice.
