Most parishes believe they are welcoming. But what does a stranger actually experience when walking through the doors?
A parish may have friendly people, active ministries, and sincere leaders, yet still leave newcomers, returning Catholics, young families, and wounded people feeling unnoticed or uncertain. True hospitality requires more than greeters, coffee hours, or good intentions. It requires a parish culture shaped by the Gospel.
In Company's Coming: A Spiritual Process for Creating More Welcoming Parishes, Richard J. McCorry presents a practical, prayerful process for helping Catholic communities become places where the welcome of Christ can be seen and felt.
Drawing on Scripture, Catholic teaching, pastoral experience, and a successful parish pilot project, McCorry guides readers through six essential steps:
- Assemble and train a parish team
- Develop a communication plan
- Assess the parish's current reality
- Discern God's vision
- Create a practical plan for change
- Implement the plan, evaluate the results, and continue improving
This is not a quick-fix program or a collection of superficial hospitality tips. It is a process of parish conversion. It helps communities examine themselves honestly, see parish life through the eyes of the stranger, and move from isolated acts of friendliness toward a lasting culture of belonging.
The book also shows how the same process can be used to strengthen parish mergers, revitalize ministries, reengage inactive Catholics, improve faith formation, and connect with young adults and families.
Written for pastors, parish staffs, pastoral councils, ministry leaders, hospitality teams, and parishioners, Company's Coming offers both spiritual grounding and practical direction for communities seeking to become more faithful, evangelical, and welcoming.
Because the stranger at the door is not an interruption to parish life.
The stranger may be Christ.
