This antiquarian book contains the first volume of Richard Gilder's The Complete Writings Of Walt Whitman. It comprises the fascinating Specimen Days section. Composed in 1881 primarily from sketches, notes, and essays written at various stages of the poet's life, Specimen Days is the closest thing Whitman ever published to a traditional autobiography. A wonderful insight into the mind of America's most famous poet, this text classic will appeal fans of Whitman's work, and is well deserving of a place atop any bookshelf. Richard Watson Gilder (1844 - 1909) was an American poet and editor. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly rare and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this vintage book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
