This collection presents the scientific writings of the Venerable Bede, a towering figure of the early Middle Ages. Primarily known for his historical works, particularly Ecclesiastical History of the English People, Bede was also a significant contributor to the scientific knowledge of his time. This volume offers insights into his work on astronomy, timekeeping, and natural philosophy.
Included are Bede's treatises on computus, the calculation of time, crucial for determining the dates of religious festivals, especially Easter. These texts reveal his understanding of the cosmos and his efforts to reconcile classical learning with Christian theology. Students and scholars interested in the history of science, medieval intellectual history, and the works of the Venerable Bede will find this comprehensive collection an invaluable resource.
