Somewhere in the last book you loved is a line you meant to keep. You remember exactly how it felt. You cannot remember where it is.
The Commonplace Book takes the four-hundred-year-old practice - a private book of passages worth keeping - and gives it the one thing it always lacked: an index. Every passage you choose gets a numbered page of its own. The theme line files it where it belongs, the source line remembers where it came from, and the see also line points at the entry that answers it - so the Theme Index can tell you, in one catalogue line, where everything you ever kept about courage lives, and the Source Register can tell you which lines each book gave you. A commonplace book you can actually search: every passage one number away, and you will always find your way back.
This is a collection you write yourself, one passage at a time. Apart from a short worked example drawn from the public domain - Austen, Thoreau, Emerson - every line in this book will be one you chose, entered in your own hand, for your own shelf. It is not a log of what you read: there are no fields for verdicts on whole books, only a numbered home for the passages that made them worth reading.
Inside:
- A four-page worked example up front - three filled-in entry pages (Austen, Thoreau, Emerson - all public domain), a filled theme line (simplicity - Entry #7, #19), a filled source line, and one see also pair pointing both ways, so you see the whole system work before you write a word
- Entry #1-100 - one full page per passage: room for the lines themselves, where they came from (with its Source #), the themes they belong to, and a see also Entry # line that weaves your passages into a web of your own
- The Theme Index - 72 theme lines set like an old library catalogue, each pairing Entry numbers with page numbers, so one glance at a theme finds every passage you filed under it
- The Source Register - 40 numbered sources, each listing the entries it gave you, so every book you kept from keeps its place
- Entries, Later & Loose Passages - numbered room beyond #100, overflow pages for themes and sources, and loose pages for the lines that have not found their number yet
- 6 x 9 format, 150 pages, cream paper - engraved manuscript ornaments, initial letters set as type, and a small engraved snail in the margins; the numbered indexes keep every page findable
A quiet, bookish gift for the friend who underlines - a birthday, Christmas morning, the start of a new reading year - or the beginning of your own next commonplace. Four hundred years of readers kept books like this one. Yours starts at Entry #1.
