Air conditioning work and commercial refrigeration share the same cycle, the same refrigerants and the same gauges. Everything else is different: the operating temperatures, the duty cycle, the controls standing between the thermostat and the compressor, the necessity of defrost, and the cost of being wrong. A comfort system that underperforms makes a building uncomfortable. A refrigeration system that underperforms destroys inventory overnight, quietly, while nobody is watching the box temperature. The system is also tightly coupled, which is what makes it hard. An undercharge and a restricted liquid line both read low on suction. Worn compressor valves and a fouled condenser both run hot. Reading one measurement in isolation produces confident, wrong conclusions. But because the effects propagate predictably, a small set of readings taken together forms a signature, and different faults produce different signatures.
That is what this handbook teaches.

- Read suction pressure, discharge pressure, superheat and subcooling as one coupled pattern, not four separate numbers
- Predict what a healthy system should read under the current load and ambient, then measure against your prediction
- Separate faults that share a symptom using compression ratio, condenser split and evaporator temperature difference
- Set superheat on a zeotropic blend, where glide changes what the pressure is telling you
- Trace a fault through a live ladder circuit, series safeties and parallel operating controls
- Evacuate to a genuine vacuum, confirm it with a decay test, and charge by the method the system calls for
- Calculate transmission, infiltration and product load, then reconcile it with what the system is actually doing
