Originally published in 1527 from the oral expositions of Ulrich Zwingli at the Schools of the Prophecy in Zurich, this commentary stands as one of the earliest witnesses of Reformed exegesis. The Swiss reformer offers a reading faithful to the biblical text, grounded in Hebrew and Greek, while engaging critically with the Latin tradition. The result is an interpretation that is clear, pastoral, and deeply committed to a return to the sources of the Christian faith.
Zwingli moves through the books of Genesis and Exodus highlighting themes that would come to define Reformation theology: the sovereignty of God in creation and history, human dignity grounded in the divine image, the covenant as the axis of revelation, and God's providential governance over His people. At the same time, he avoids excessive allegory, giving priority to the literal sense of the text and its application to the life of the Church.
