As 18-year-old boys went off to fight in Vietnam, they were entirely unprepared for the experience. They knew nothing about the true history of the Vietnamese people, the reasons for the U.S. supporting the conflict, and how we were unlikely to win the war. So many young men were pumped up with a false sense of patriotism. This book is one story of the day-to-day life of the average soldier in Vietnam. My story. There were over 2,700,000 million stories by the end of the conflict.

As each soldier experienced his lot for the year, the confusion of the conflict fostered resentment and a sense of guilt that would last a lifetime. Those who served on the front line resented those behind the lines. The horror observed by the men in the field would haunt them for the rest of their lives. Those who spent the year safely behind the lines often felt guilt once they returned to civilian life. In both cases, the Vietnam experience made the return to civilian life a legitimate hardship.

Today, some 58 years later, the status of the Vietnam veteran has changed. A recent survey indicated there are close to 1.7 million Vietnam veterans still alive. Another survey showed there were many millions more who claim to be Vietnam veterans but were never in-country. The addition of the politically correct Vietnam Era Veteran has confused the issue further. Having had your boots on the ground and received combat pay is the only accurate indication that you were a true Vietnam veteran. Everyone who touched down in Vietnam was at risk of death or injury. It is my hope this book will provide you with that insight.
