Just mention Christopher Columbus, and passions will start to run high. Some people portray him as a brave explorer who ventured into the unknown. Others, however, feel only a strong surge of anger or disappointment. Open any history textbook, and you'll find him everywhere, most often mentioned as the only person who changed the world forever. But look at it from the perspective of the people who were already living in the Americas before he arrived there. Now things are starting to look bleak. Diseases devastated these villages, following the violence and the European military power that ruthlessly invaded, destroyed, or wiped out entire centuries-old communities. For many descendants of these people today, Columbus is not a hero; rather, he is a symbol of a conqueror, a colonizer, and a plunderer of the land stolen from their ancestors. Here, his name has become synonymous with misfortune.
That's why no one agrees on Columbus. Was he a brave dreamer, or was he just another ruthless conquistador relentlessly pursuing gold and glory?
