The Color-Bearer is a historical novel written by Francis A. Clary and published in 1864. The story is set during the American Civil War and follows the experiences of a Union soldier named Harry Kenton. Kenton is a young man who serves as a color-bearer, carrying the flag of his regiment into battle. He is brave and dedicated to his cause, but also struggles with the violence and loss of life that he witnesses on the battlefield. The novel is divided into several parts, each of which covers a different stage of the war. The first part describes Kenton's experiences at the Battle of Bull Run, where he witnesses the chaos and confusion of the first major battle of the war. In subsequent parts, Kenton participates in other important battles, such as Antietam and Gettysburg. Along the way, he meets other soldiers and officers, including his friend Dick Mason and his commanding officer, Colonel Winchester.Throughout the novel, Clary explores themes such as patriotism, courage, and sacrifice. He also depicts the horrors of war, including the physical and emotional toll it takes on soldiers and civilians alike. The Color-Bearer is a vivid and engaging portrayal of the Civil War, and provides readers with a glimpse into the experiences of those who fought and died for their country. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
