The Colonel's Money is a novel written by Lucy Cecil Lillie and published in 1887. It tells the story of Colonel John Stanhope, a wealthy and respected man who is found dead in his study with a bullet wound in his head. The investigation into his death reveals a complex web of family secrets, financial dealings, and romantic entanglements. The Colonel's two sons, Arthur and Reginald, become the prime suspects in their father's murder. Arthur, the elder son, is a successful businessman who is deeply in debt and has been embezzling money from his father's estate. Reginald, the younger son, is a charming but irresponsible man who has been living beyond his means and has a history of gambling debts. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that many people had motives for killing the Colonel. His wife, Lady Stanhope, has been having an affair with a younger man and stands to inherit a large sum of money. The Colonel's business partner, Mr. Carruthers, has been involved in shady financial dealings and may have wanted to silence the Colonel to protect his own interests. The novel is a gripping mystery that keeps readers guessing until the very end. It also explores themes of family loyalty, greed, and the corrupting influence of money. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
