On the farm called Nirvana, freedom arrives with five promises carved on a stone. For eighty years, every ruler in turn clarifies them: the dynasty that inherits merit, the showman who sells hope, the fat cats who buy the gates, the water, and the scales, the judges who let justice ripen until it no longer matters. The promises are amended, sung, sealed, and swallowed. The elections continue. Nothing else does.
The animals pay for all of it - in eggs, in milk, in the coins pressed from salt and soap - and at every election are promised everything. They are never courted, never served, never counted where it matters. As the fat cats teach their young: the public are not on the wheel; they are the ground it rolls on. They enter the circle twice in a life - once to vote, once to pay.
Beneath the floorboards, uncounted and unkillable, the cockroaches keep the only honest ledger on the farm - because the real war of every farmhouse is never with its opposition. It is with the record.
When the farm's highest judge calls its jobless young parasites, the insult becomes a flag. What the machine then does to the ones who dared to count - with courts, with cameras, with hygiene - is the story of our century, told in the plainest English by a narrator who has died forty times and forgotten nothing.
Simple enough for a schoolroom. Sharp enough to draw blood.
