Anna Kingsford was a physician, animal rights campaigner, and one of the most formidable mystics of the Victorian era - and Clothed with the Sun is her masterwork. First published in 1889 and edited by her close collaborator Edward Maitland, this collection gathers the illuminations Kingsford received in trance and vision: revelations reinterpreting Christian scripture and doctrine through an esoteric, Hermetic, and deeply feminine lens.
Long before New Age spirituality had a name, Kingsford was reclaiming the divine feminine within Christian tradition, and reading Genesis, the Gospels, and classical myth as symbolic maps of inner spiritual transformation rather than literal history. Her visions place her alongside the great mystics and visionaries of the esoteric revival - a key influence on the Hermetic Society and a bridge between Christian mysticism and the occult renaissance that followed.
This edition presents her illuminations in a clean, accessible format for readers discovering esoteric Christianity, Hermeticism, or the overlooked women of occult history for the first time.
This edition of Clothed with the Sun takes as its base text the 1912 Popular Edition, edited by Samuel Hopgood Hart in 1906. A small number of Hart's footnotes have been omitted, and several notes have been drawn from Edward Maitland's original first edition where they offered clarifying or historical detail not retained in the later edition. The footnotes presented here should therefore be understood as a considered composite of both editions, rather than a strict reproduction of either. The Appendix has been similarly adapted for this edition. In the source editions, its annotations were keyed to the pagination of that particular printing - references which no longer correspond to any later typesetting. Rather than reconstruct these correspondences, the Appendix is presented here as a
standalone sequence of Notes, numbered consecutively for ease of reference. They are not keyed to specific passages in the main text, and are offered instead as a body of supplementary reflection in their own right. Readers wishing to consult the original pagination and annotation of either source edition for further research may find facsimiles of the Hart 1912 Popular Edition and Maitland's first edition through standard rare-book and archival channels.
