One closed hotel-room door. One fatal injury. A century of certainty the surviving record cannot support.

On Labor Day 1921, model and silent-film actress Virginia Rappe became acutely ill during a gathering at San Francisco's St. Francis Hotel. Four days later, she died from peritonitis after a ruptured bladder. Roscoe Arbuckle-one of Hollywood's most famous comedians-was accused, prosecuted for manslaughter, tried three times, and acquitted. The legal case ended. The questions around room 1219 did not.
