Private inquiry agent Gregory Valence is asked by his in-laws to investigate the disappearance of their son Fred. The family have reported the matter to the police, but so far they have heard nothing. It is 1937 and, in searching Fred's flat, Greg and his estranged wife Lydia make an important discovery. It appears that Fred, a freelance journalist, has penetrated The Realignment Society, a sinister cartel fostered and financed by the German Nazi Party. He learns that the local police have been ordered to drop the case to avoid impeding an on-going investigation of the organisation by Special Branch. The same restraint is maintained, even when more disturbing news about Fred emerges. Greg is determined to bring his brother-in-law's abductors to justice, but a more serious consideration by far is the Realignment Society's threat to national security. Even with MI5 and Special Branch involved, however, Greg refuses to be side lined.
