The futures depicted in modern science fiction cinema are rarely technological utopias; instead, they serve as a stage for severe dystopic struggles and deepening class disparities. This book explores science fiction cinema not as a fantasy of tomorrow, but as a critical arena for social and economic conflict.
By examining cult classics and defining works of the genre, essays illustrate how science fiction films perform an archaeology of future conflicts and project contemporary anxieties about inequality into the worlds to come. The book fills a gap in the current scholarly debate by arguing that modern science fiction cinema does not merely predict the future but actively interrogates the possibility of catastrophic social division.
