Not illustrated. 1793 Excerpt: ...the Day appointed, the Church was duly prepared for the festive Act j in whose Edifice were seen thirty four solid Marble Columns, which on the Sides were accompanied by the Altar Pieces, and among them were comprehended six, being of the three principal Chapels; and which, placed on Bases of the finest Stones, made the said Chapels to measure in Height thirty nine Palms, and between fifteen and sixteen broad: These Pillars, as well as all the other lapidary Work (such as Porticos, Cornishes, Entablatures, Festoons, &c.) of this superb Bajilic, consist of the most beautiful Marbles and Jaspars, that could be collected in all Parts; in which Nature hath displayed such a strange, variegated Mixture of Beauties, as seem rather Embellishments or Products of Art, than slowing from a self-efficient Cause: And omitting to mention all other Decorations in which the Temple then abounded, though not quite finished, it was on the aforesaid Day consecrated, and dedicated to the proposed Saints; and the Benediction extended to all the particular Cells and other Apartments, Crosses, Altars, and all their Ornaments, Priests Vestments, and every thing fixed and moveable, used in the officiating divine Service. Which I excuse particularizing, to avoid an unnecessary Prolixity; since when, fifty eight Marble Statues have been erected m the Portico, and interior Parts of the Temple, which hath not a little added to the graceful Elegance of what was before seen there.
