The City of the Sun is a foundational work of utopian fiction and political philosophy, presenting a vision of an ideal society governed by reason, science, and communal principles. Written by the Italian Dominican friar Tommaso Campanella, the text is structured as a dialogue between a Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller and a Genoese sea captain. Through their conversation, the captain describes his discovery of a magnificent city on the island of Taprobane, where the social order is defined by the total abolition of private property and the shared responsibility of its citizens.
The city itself is a marvel of symbolic architecture, designed with seven concentric walls named after the seven planets and adorned with frescoes that serve as a comprehensive visual encyclopedia for its inhabitants. Led by a philosopher-king known as Sun or Metaphysic, the people of the city live in a state of religious and scientific harmony. Campanella's work explores themes of social justice, education, and the intersection of natural law with theology. As a significant text of the Renaissance, The City of the Sun remains a compelling study of the human desire to construct a perfect world and continues to influence modern political thought and literary traditions.
