On the same day, at Paris, Richelieu gave a magnificent fete to the king and court to celebrate the opening of the Palais-Cardinal. Pomp and splendour reigned everywhere. The tragedy of Mirame, * the work of Richelieu himself, was performed in the private theatre of the palace; and, while the distinguished guests occupied the boxes, the populace of Paris crowded the pit. But the performance excited no enthusiasm, and drew no applause from the crowd. The Cardinal was deeply mortified, and his chagrin was made the keener by the storms of applause which rose from the crowd when Corneille was casually noticed among the spectators. At the close of the tragedy the Cardinal was conveyed in his chair from the theatre through a large window; and a hundred voices proclaimed the fulfilment of the prophecy t that had spread confusion among the conspirators at the house of Marion de Lorme. He then held a reception in more than royal state and dignity, where princes, nobles, marshals, and ambassadors vied in doing him homage.
