The eighth commandment extends to all unfair advantage which is taken of another man's ignorance, and forbids gaming and smuggling, all use of false measures, all tricks in trade, and all refusal to pay debts, or to give restitution of former dishonesty. The ninth commandment not only forbids us to give false witness in a court of justice, but to circulate or believe anything to another's disadvantage. It makes every man guilty who yields to the temptation of attributing to false motives what is done by a rival, or breaks the law of charity and truth in political or religious controversy. The tenth commandment does not forbid industry, and an honest and God-fearing desire to improve our condition in life; but it does forbid all discontent, all envy at another's better success, and all inordinate desire to possess what belongs to our neighbour. The Decalogue is followed by an excellent summary of our duty to God, and our duty to our neighbour. The former division embraces the first four commandments, or the first Table of the Decalogue; the latter, the last six commandments, or the second Table. Each commandment is referred to in these two divisions. The connection will be seen in the following: -- My duty towards God is to believe in him, to fear him (first commandment), and to love him with all ruy heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, and with all my strength; to worship him, to give him thanks, to put my whole trust in him, to call upon him (second commandment), to honour his holy name and his word, and to serve him truly all the days of my life (third commandment).
