It is a wise father who knows his son. But maybe it's a very wise child who takes time to know his Father. Due to a poor relationship with his own father, Martin Anders wishes to have a close relationship to his other Father. However, the hypocrisy of religion disturbs him. In fact, he prefers blunt honesty and open blaspheme over hypocrisy. This is evident in his relationship with his antogonistic atheist wife Deborah, his friendship with slimy movie producer Harry Winston, and several other characters. He then finds a necently started religion: the Church of Sol Invictus. A friend warns him this religion is in actuality a cult, but he doesn't listen. He goes so far as to sacrifice much of his wealth and start living in their church commune. He begins a close relationship with a beautiful though naive woman Sandra on the commune. However, when she abruptly disappears, he and his roommate, misanthropic, sexist millionaire Hugh Price escape. Hugh then reveals the darkest secret of the Church: that they are indeed a cult.If you are a fan of the works of James K. Morrow (author of Towing Jehova) and Chuch Palahniuk (author of Fight Club), then you may enjoy this novel. Also, the dialogue is humorously littered with numerous curse words. If you enjoy the TV series South Park, then you may appreciate this.Michael Bennet's pessimistic outlook on God, life, and humanity are clearly evident in this novel. However, he still has faith.
