The story is a reflective, first-person narrative told by an elderly veteran, recounting a profound and miraculous experience from his past. The narrative weaves together memories from his youth, wartime service, and a magical Christmas event, leading to a passionate and heartfelt ending that proclaims the true meaning of Christmas.
The narrator, now in his eighties and suffering from dementia, is sitting by a fire, surrounded by family during a Christmas gathering in 2001. The fire's glow triggers vivid recollections of his youth, particularly Christmas Eve in 1942, when he returned home after flight training during World War II. He describes his journey across the United States, the changing American landscape during wartime, and the warmth of his grandparents' home in Pennsylvania. The narrative paints a rich picture of family traditions, the roles of each family member, and the bittersweet passage of time, including the loss of loved ones and the changes brought by war.
The heart of the story is set on Christmas Day, 1943, as the young Army Air Force pilot volunteers for a dangerous reconnaissance mission over Germany. His aircraft is severely damaged by anti-aircraft fire, leaving him lost, with no navigation instruments, and pursued by a German fighter. Expecting to be shot down, he is instead joined in formation by the German pilot, who does not attack but leads him through an unreal experience.
As they fly together, the German plane transforms into a legendary red Fokker Dr I triplane, piloted by Manfred von Richthofen-the Red Baron of World War I fame. The narrator believes he is hallucinating or dead, but the experience he comes to realize is real. The Red Baron presents him with a Luther Rose, a symbol of faith and salvation, identical to one from the narrator's family home. After this encounter with the supernatural, the narrator finds himself safely over England, able to land his crippled plane.
Back in the present, the narrator shares this story with his family for the first time, prompted by his granddaughter's question about his favorite Christmas story. The family's reactions range from awe to skepticism, especially from a dismissive boyfriend. The narrator reveals two never before seen photographs taken by his plane's camera: one of the Red Baron's triplane and another of the pilot himself. He also presents the actual Luther Rose medallion, which mysteriously appeared in his cockpit after the flight.
The narrator tells his family of this Christmas miracle that saved not only his life, but gave them life as well. He then shares the message of faith, hope, and the true meaning of Christmas to his descendants. He emphasizes that the greatest miracle is the birth of Jesus, whose message of salvation is symbolized by the Luther Rose. The story ends with the narrator gifting the rose to his family as a reminder of faith and the true meaning of Christmas.
