From our conversations, my godfather, a Catholic priest, was aware of my relationship with the Holy Spirit, that early on, I had spontaneously and for the rest of my life seen the Holy Spirit within as an infinite golden light, could hear its creative vibration, and had come to feel it flowing through my nervous system. When he asked me to be his spiritual director, I wrote him a letter describing how I practiced the prayer of the heart and a breathing exercise somewhat similar to the secret Greek Orthodox breathing practice for encouraging the Holy Spirit to flow up through the nervous system. I also explained a few of my experiences while resting in the intuitive awareness of deep meditation. Most importantly, I wrote about the comfort and guidance of the Holy Spirit and that a personal, interactive relationship with the Holy Spirit was real, not just an imagination in this modern-day, materialistic world.
Another parish priest visiting from out of state was given the letter to read, and, having done so, asked if I would expand on it and write a course in Christian mysticism for a class he would be teaching in a couple of months. He believed that Christians living in the world really needed to hear the story of my relationship with the Holy Spirit. I said to him that, over my many years' experiences trying to explain early Christian spiritual principles to modern-day Christians, I had concluded that I had such a very different experience and understanding of the Holy Spirit that no one would want to hear it,
