When it comes to divorce and remarriage, the fundamentalist logic often goes something like this: Divorce is never permitted unless adultery has occurred, a term whose definition is itself hotly debated. According to this view, physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, or virtually any other circumstance does not constitute biblical grounds for divorce:

Likewise, when it comes to remarriage, the fundamentalist position generally teaches that a divorced person may only remarry after the death of their former spouse, a belief that can tragically foster the distorted hope that the former spouse will die.
In practice, this theology often punishes victims of abuse for escaping their abusers, condemning them to a lifetime of loneliness and denying them the opportunity to experience love again, a conclusion that stands in direct tension with the heart of Genesis 2:18: It is not good for the man to be alone.
The tragedy is that the fundamentalist view is not only logically inconsistent and pastorally damaging, but also built upon misunderstandings of Jewish law, Western theological assumptions, and translations that often obscure the original Hebrew and Greek.
This concise book explores what the Bible actually teaches about divorce and remarriage by recovering the original cultural, historical, and linguistic context. Along the way, it challenges popular misconceptions while offering a compassionate, biblically grounded alternative.
