The Choephoroe, Libation Bearers, the second play in Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy, continues the saga of the cursed House of Atreus. In this installment, Orestes returns to Argos to avenge his father Agamemnon's murder at the hands of his mother, Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus. Haunted by the ghost of his father and spurred on by his sister Electra, Orestes faces an agonizing moral dilemma: to kill his own mother and invite further divine wrath, or to leave his father's death unavenged.
Gilbert Murray's translation captures the poetic and dramatic intensity of Aeschylus's original Greek, rendering the ancient tragedy in accessible and evocative English rhyming verse. This edition offers readers a compelling engagement with one of the foundational works of Western literature, exploring themes of vengeance, justice, and the cyclical nature of violence.
