This book presents the history of the Sui Dynasty (隋朝, Suà Cháo), a short but powerful empire that changed the direction of China's development. In a brief period, it restored unity (统一, tǒngyī) after long years of division and rebuilt the structure of imperial rule.
The Sui rulers created a strong centralized system (中央集权, zhōngyāng jÃquán) and launched major national projects such as the Grand Canal (大运河, Dà Yùnhé), which reshaped transport and trade across the country. These achievements helped connect northern and southern China more closely than ever before.
However, the same ambition that built the empire also placed heavy pressure on society through taxation (税收, shuìshōu) and forced labor (徭役, yáoyì), leading to widespread unrest. The contrast between rapid progress and sudden collapse defines the story of the Sui.
By exploring its rise and fall, readers gain both historical insight and useful Mandarin Chinese (中文, Zhōngwén) vocabulary to understand how this important era shaped later dynasties.
