The Children by Nina Fedorova is a heartwarming and poignant novel that tells the story of a group of children who are forced to grow up too soon. Set in Russia during World War II, the novel follows the lives of five children who have been orphaned by the war and are now living in a children's home. The children are all unique and have their own struggles, but they come together to form a family and support each other through the hardships they face. The main character, 12-year-old Masha, is a strong and resilient girl who takes on the role of caretaker for the younger children. She is joined by her best friend, Vitya, who is a talented artist and dreams of becoming a famous painter one day. There is also the mischievous and adventurous Petya, the quiet and thoughtful Sonya, and the youngest of the group, 4-year-old Alyonka. As the war rages on and resources become scarce, the children must learn to fend for themselves and rely on each other. They face hunger, illness, and the constant threat of danger from the bombs and soldiers that surround them. But despite their difficult circumstances, the children never lose hope and continue to find joy and beauty in the world around them. The Children is a touching and inspiring story about the power of friendship, resilience, and the human spirit.
